From what I understand, the Russians continued to develop tube/valve technology well after the West had largely moved to transistors. As a result, they developed and produced tubes that are superior in specs to the older types developed in the 1930s…

Found out there's a place down the road from me that does sharpening. I'll give him a call tomorrow. The Festool dealer told me I was using the wrong blade anyway (too many teeth), which is probably my real problem...

OK, the ground wire from a power plug did the trick. Mostly, still some noise when I touch the tonearm but it's way better than it was before. And I have to leave the light in the corner (dimmer switch) off.

Erhhhh..... I'll leave that as "an exercise for the lucky buyer".... No takers? This is stupidly cheap. I'll stick it on ebay tomorrow otherwise

Good thinking Graham. Drove down to Clark Rubber but they didn't have anything thin enough. The bloke was kind enough to make a couple of slices off a small block of something similar. But it's still about twice as thick. I'll give it a go but I hav…

Hi Wally, glad you could make it

Hah! Oops. I'll fix that.....

Hah hah, just seen that VPI has announced a turntable with a built-in headphone amp. Includes headphones and cartridge.

I think I'll have to try the modified power cable, there aren't any grounded components nearby. It could be that my house ground is noisy as heck... I'll try tonight

Ah. Putting my finger on the tonearm results in a big increase in buzz. This is not normal, right? I suspect that although the grounding wire is connected to the phono preamp, it goes nowhere useful, because the preamp is powered by a wallwart an…

Heh Graham you have reached the age where your imagination works better than your eyesight I'll see what I can do but adjusting the layout might take a bit of doing. In the meantime, click on it to see larger. However I do agree that the…

Okey dokey, thanks guys, I'll pay attention next time I'm cutting. Which should be Sunday! Coz a) the weather is clearing up and b) Paul mc240 helped me get a couple of sheets of birch ply today. How much does a blade sharpen typically cost?

First go with the offline Rdio on the iPod in the car today. Some confusion when all of a sudden the ambient selection started playing Ian Anderson, but it seemed to work Ok when replayed. Hard to see what's on that little screen sometimes. Flying c…

How did you know the blade needed resharpening? (Serious question!) Was it just, like, not cutting, or more subtle than that?

Wow. Well I'd love to hear it, when it's ready. You're getting one?
