I really only have 1 dog

George Bush freaks out an overnight report that 2 Brazilian soldiers were killed by Afghan insurgents.
" What the hell !!! How did that happen ? " then he stops for a moment and asks "how many is a brazillion again?".

oh if only I had heard some new jokes......

Good to see a Nordio forum with old friends and you, of course.

  • Welcome aboard doggies.

  • G'day Nigel! How are those panel repairs coming along? ;)

  • Tell em your hippy joke

    That's a trick question,right?

  • They're coming along ! When I have the panels ready to go, I might get your help to show me how to use miniDSP and impulses to align the timing with the 8" driver below.
I need to tilt the panels back (45o ?) so that that alignment isn't too bad when standing. Tilting them back will also help fix the loss of treble/image when I stand up.
BTW - one diaphragm tore slightly when Todd came over, over a year ago and I had the system at full volume. (It will be interesting to see how hard I can drive the new panels before they tear). I have to remember I doubled the Vout of the buffer I built for my passive preamp. 1.2 times should be safer.
    Yours in trepidation,
    Reckless Engineer

Oh, not at all, Nig has a new workshop!

Sure, no worries, it will at the least be interesting to try :)

I was just thinking about this. What about just raising them up higher? Hm.... well let's work on it, I'd be curious to see if measurements of response at different heights/angles matches the sims.

  • Raising them a little bit is an option that addresses the loss when standing up.
It would also give them a more sleek and slender look and depending on this year's screen cloth could look stunning on the catwalk or at Warwick Farm races. The alignment issue means that the panels will be mounted further back on the box below housing the 8" mid/bass driver. The alignment can be exact but only for a particular ear height. When one's ears move from there the alignment is out. Tilting the panel slightly will reduce that error but there is a good chance that the presentation from the panels is negatively impacted. ?? I also have to consider the future location/use of these speakers. Currently where they are, listeners are never standing, but in the open room by the kitchen, friends would be standing, if I had friends. I can easily have 2 sets of mountings on the box below which would enable quick change from one to the other. The good thing is that much of this is easy to suck and see.

  • Good point! Presumably the sitting situation would be the one to optimise for though. Are you still planning around 200 Hz for the crossover? That's a wavelength of 1.7 meters so phase errors at the crossover will be fairly small. Even so, tilting will reduce it. Hm, interesting.

  • Been doing lots of measuring and finding heaps of variation. One extra variation in my case is not just room modes but my speakers's configuration. My ESL3 panels are running full range (ie not through the minDSP which everything else is) does not have much bass but does have a signif resonance peak around 40Hz. So there is a very inconsistent bass coming from a line source (the ESL3 panels) directly above 2 x 8": woofers (side by side) 2 point sources. So any movement of the microphone makes this measurement vary more than normal I think.
So it is all a dog's breakfast currently. Despite all this the system is sounding better than ever and still some further improvements to come over the next few months.

  • Months~!?

    WtF!?

  • Slow but steady is our Nigel.

  • New, thinner gap'd treble panels (with reduced bias voltage) now operational and achieving the extra SPL that the standard ones lacked. So... I have taken treble off the wider panels, which suffered a little intermodulation. Result is s-w-eeet. Worth the effort. New boxes for the 8" bass drivers next. Then 2 active subs and a final measurement session and I will be finished. (haha - delusion) time to start mixing up nice music compilations after that

  • Hi Nigel, did you measure them to compare to the old ones?

Anyway get cracking on those subs :D

  • Haven't measured anything yet, building the boxes for the 8" Peerlesses.
I love MDF, after taking precise measurements of the triangular sided design and cutting the pieces, when I placed them together there were 1 mm gaps all over the place. Oh well... silicon will do the trick, but then I got my son to drill and screw the pieces togther and bingo, almost no gaps !! MDF bends like plastic and is so intoxicating to breath in.
I have a small off-cut to take to bed later tonight.

  • Triangular? You are brave. Have you tried expanding polyurethane glue? It's amazing stuff. You'll be high for a week as well.

  • Shhh ! I don't want the other glues to think I have a favourite....
