    The inability of conservative society to contain the waywardness (perceived) of the next generation.

    The song is a point in time. Around the time of Buddy Holly et al demise.

    It's describing a time, a time more innocent and the loss of a star , Buddy Holly- well! three stars, which is in fact the title of another song about Buddy's death.
    This was a post WW2, Korea and a pre Vietnam War tragedy for the music loving youth of the day
